My children were over-the-moon excited to find out that one of their favorite authors, William D. Burt, is releasing his series, The Creation Seekers, on Audible. Book one, The Lake Lights, is available now, narrated by Matthew S. Newbold. Here are my kiddos to tell you all about it. "My daughter went to bed at 11:00 p.m. last week and read The Lake Lights until 3:00 a.m. She’s fourteen, and she said she knew she would not be able to sleep until she read the entire book! She woke up tired, but happy—very, very happy. Now her twin sister is trying to get the book read in one day! My son begged her to give him the book to take to a summer ministry camp, but she refused, so he took our printed beta version to tell everyone else at camp about it. The Lake Lights by William D. Burt is a gripping story that combines elements of adventure, sci-fi, and fantasy into a story that will plunge readers into an intriguing world of mystery and conflict. Jonathan Oliver can’t understand the source of the mysterious lights that hover above Oswego Lake and, determined to find out where they come from, he undertakes a mission to track the lights as his home school project. His quest leads him to the abandoned Prosser Mine in Iron Mountain where he discovers ancient secrets. His father, a physicist, goes missing in the Afghanistan wilderness, and Jonathan has to interpret a cryptic message that will allow him to uncover other mysteries and create a unique invention. With his town threatened by a powerful force and a crooked scientist bent on stealing his work, Jonathan will need more than courage to save his city and protect his father’s legacy.
A splendid first entry in The Creation Seekers series, William D. Burt’s The Lake Lights offers great entertainment to readers, a story that explores themes of creationism, religion, faith, and brilliantly presents the proverbial conflict between good and evil. The characters are well-developed and readers will enjoy following the protagonist and his grandfather as they work together. The antagonist is created to fit the role he plays in the story and is a character that will inspire feelings of apprehension and mistrust in readers. This is a story for readers who love mystery and adventure, a story that is well-plotted and executed with mastery. I enjoyed the graceful flow of the prose and the witticism that punctuates the narrative. It’s a very entertaining story.
CAMILLE MURRAY FOR “INTERVIEWS AND REVIEWS”
This is a great book for middle school readers! I enjoyed the unique combination of adventure, creation science, science fiction, and faith. (And of course riding a Pteranodon is every kid's dream…) I really didn't expect a kid's book to have such an unexpected twist at the end, but The Lake Lights surprised me. Overall, I enjoyed the read, and I can honestly say I have never read a book quite like this.
JANE MOUTTET FOR “INTERVIEWS AND REVIEWS”
There is much to like about The Lake Lights - mystery, strange creatures, science, a main character with dyslexia, a code to break, and international crime. The book contains a lot of science - particularly physics and paleontology - I cannot comment of the accuracy of the scientific content. While there is a lot of science - it is all important to the plot and is not presented in way that would overpower the story. It is more about the story than the science. The mystery and intrigue aspects of the book appear to be well-thought out. I appreciate that the characters, especially Jon, show growth over the course of the story. I also like the fact that Jon and his grandfather are willing to stand up for their Christian beliefs even in the face of criticism and mockery. Are there still dinosaurs or prehistoric creatures alive today? I’d like to believe so and I don’t think I am alone. William Burt includes mysterious creatures in this interesting story which turn out to be Pterosaurs with a luminescent capabilities. There are many aspects to the plot of The Lake Lights which are all neatly tied up at the end of the story. I look forward to reading more books in the Creation Seekers series. I think this story will appeal to those in grades 5 and up - especially those with an interest in science, paleontology, and creationism. Those who struggle with dyslexia may also be encouraged to find a book character who struggles with it as well. I would not hesitate to place this book in my K-12 Christian School library.
