Welcome to Mapleton, a sleepy Thalmosian village where people earn their living tapping maple trees to make syrup and candy. Kyleah's father, Branagan, is Mapleton's sugarmaster. However, beneath the village's placid facade festers a terrible secret. One spring day, Kyleah and her brother, Barley, are helping their father in the sugar bush when Kyleah discovers a sword jutting out of a maple tree. By removing the sword, Kyleah unwittingly opens a door that cannot be easily shut again and rekindles an ancient rebellion. The key to quelling the revolt lies in finding a perfect mirror, a quest that leads Kyleah through water and fire in search of the fabled firebird. In becoming the very enemy she dreads, she learns to trust the King when all seems lost. Ultimately, she finds strength in her weakness and weakness in her strength.

Amazon.com Reviewer: Sarah Heath—4 stars

Kyleah is the daughter of a sugarmaster in the town of Mapleton. Eager to help her father in any way she can, she too collects the sap of trees, hoping to one day become known as a sugarmistress. Called useless because of her limp, she must contend with an unsympathetic stepmother and stepsisters. One day, she unknowingly unleashes a dark evil, one that she must work to fight against. It will take all her strength to resist what will try to overcome her.

I love that in William Burt's "King of the Trees" series, there are threads of stories from our world woven into the stories from the world of Gaelathane. Kyleah's Mirrors is, in some ways, a retelling of the classic Cinderella story. But unlike Cinderella, Kyleah doesn't need a prince to save her. Through her trials and adventures, she becomes known as the “Gifted Girl”—no longer useless and unwanted. True to other books in the "King of the Trees” series, the main character, Kyleah, must learn to trust in Gaelathane's love and sacrifice.

I greatly enjoyed Kyleah's Mirrors. As with The Downs (#5 in the "King of the Trees" series), I think this book will appeal to adolescent girls in particular. Kyleah is a strong heroine, one worth rooting for and emulating. 4 stars!

"VERY GOOD BOOK!”

"I have loved this book ever since I got it. It is fascinating and the author provides great descriptions for settings and characters in his book. Another great thing about it is that William D. Burt puts Christianity in his series. For any home-school mom looking for something for her kids to read, this is a great choice. If you are just looking for something to read, I recommend this book and the series.”
